Dan Rather spoke at the Poynter Institute’s Edward R. Murrow Program for Journalists on Nov. 11. Calling Murrow his “North Star,” Rather reflected on Murrow’s World War II reporting and his impact on broadcast journalism in general. Rather emphasized writing as the foundation of all good journalism, including broadcast journalism. In attendance were worldwide recipients of the State Department’s Edward R. Murrow Fellowship, which provides journalism training and workshops to journalists from around the world. Later in the evening, Rather spoke at the Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront, where he shared personal stories, as well as some of his signature Texas aphorisms. Describing the tone of the 2016 presidential election, Rather called it so nasty it could “gag a buzzard.”
