On this Day in ’61, Shirelles Top the Charts

By Jessica Wheeler, AliveTampaBay Columnist

On this day in 1961, the Shirelles reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts with “Will You Love Me Tomorrow.” The song was the first by an African-American girl group ever to top the charts, as well as the first song of any group from the 1960s girl group sound to have that honor. The song, written by Carole King, marked a step up in quality for pop songs and is still cited as one of the greatest rock songs of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. It was ranked at No. 126 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 2004.
