On This Day, “Get Back” Hit No. 1

By Jessica Wheeler, AliveTampaBay Columnist

On May 24, 1969, the Beatles’ “Get Back” hit No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Chart, beginning a run of five weeks at the top. The song was credited to The Beatles with Billy Preston, making it the only Beatles single to be co-credited with another artist. Billy Preston was brought in to add keyboards to the song in a live studio recording. George Harrison invited Preston to the session after meeting him at a party, thinking that Preston’s presence as an outsider in the studio would tame the fighting amongst the band members.
