A new exhibit at the TECO Public Art Gallery called “Art From the Heartland” is underway at the downtown Tampa gallery located at 702 North Franklin Street.

Artist Mike King’s solo exhibition of his watercolor and acrylic paintings are images of rural and urban Florida to Brooklyn, NY, and Maryland.

“Mike’s influences in watercolor come from Andrew Wyeth, Edgar Whitney and Tony Couch,” according to the gallery.  “His abstract works were inspired by abstract expressionist artists Hans Hoffmann, Jackson Pollock and Sam Francis.”

“I apply what Pollock said about his own work: Every painting has a life of its own. I just try to let it come through,’” artist King said.

Mr. King has been affiliated with galleries in Florida over the past thirty years.  This includes the Nuance Gallery in Tampa, Vincent William Gallery in St. Petersburg and Philmore Gallery in Sarasota.  His work includes commissioned pieces for individuals and well-known local and national corporations, according to the gallery.

The exhibition, which is free and open to the public,  started on July 2 and runs through Aug. 31.  Mr. King will host a talk and tour of his exhibition from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the gallery on July 27.

The TECO Public Art Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. For information about the gallery, contact Curator Debra Radke at dradke2@gmail.com.
