The Polo Bar, Ralph Lauren’s clubby restaurant in Manhattan, is something of a visual ode to equestrian culture. Oil paintings of horses and jockeys line the walls, silver trophies sit on mantelpieces, and perfectly worn saddles hang over clutches of wooden polo mallets arranged just so.

They were American girl groups, their chiffon dresses and bouffant hairdos masking their young ages. And their hits dominated the supposed fallow ground of early 1960s pop.

Are Readers Happier?

Several years ago, I was given as a gift a remote session with a bibliotherapist at the London headquarters of the School of Life, which offers innovative courses to help people deal with the daily emotional challenges of existence. I have to admit that at first I didn’t really like the idea of being given a reading “prescription.”
