President Biden has thrown a grenade into America’s fragile trust in its justice system. He has issued a full and unconditional pardon of Hunter Biden after repeatedly saying he would not do so.
For years, Democrat elected officials and talking heads warned that Donald Trump would politicize justice, yet Biden’s action undermines that very argument. This pardon waves away years of legal troubles for the President’s son; it obliterates the President’s claim to moral high ground.
Biden’s justification — that raw politics corrupted justice — rings hollow . This act reinforces public cynicism: justice is for elites, not everyone else. Ironically, Biden’s move adds strength to the populist critique he sought to vanquish.
