On June 27, 1968, Elvis Presley recorded the live shows that would be edited together for his television special, Elvis. The show, which led to a career renaissance for Presley, would eventually be known as the “Comeback Special.” Combining elaborately choreographed numbers with more intimate, informal performances, the show displayed the full range of Presley’s talent and helped return the King to the pop charts, where he had been absent in the wake of a string of bad movies. The next year, he would top the charts with “Suspicious Minds.”
