Meet the Real “Alice” from Carroll’s Wonderland

What did the real Alice from Lewis Carroll’s books look like?

Luckily, Carroll took photographs of her as a child — and later as an adult — in the early days of photography, back in the 1800s.

The Guardian reports that “fragile images by some of the pioneers of Victorian photography, rarely displayed because the prints and negatives are so vulnerable to light damage, will star in an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London next spring.”

Among them: Lewis Carroll’s portraits of Alice Liddell, the inspiration and model for his stories about Alice in Wonderland. Delicate original negatives will also be featured.

If you’re in London, stop by the National Portrait Gallery, and go down the rabbit hole.
