When you look at the back of Roberto Clemente’s baseball card you see exactly 3,000 career hits.
The milestone 3,000 hit was in the last regular game of the 1972 season for the Pittsburg Pirate great.
That long ago season was the last one for Mr. Clemente, who died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve, 48 years ago, while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.
The 15-time-All-Star is remembered for his humanitarian work by Major League Baseball with the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award. It’s given each year to a major league player who best represents the game of baseball.
The 2020 recipient is Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals.
The All-Star pitcher said: “This is the crown jewel of any award I have ever received!”
