The New York Times: The End of Identity Liberalism.
Did Democrats lose the election because they focused too much on celebrating specific demographic groups — at the expense of others?
Mark Lilla of The New York Times spent a year in Europe, where he read mostly European news sources, and then took a fresh glance at how American media outlets operate. The American press is fixated, he says, with declaring that a certain person from a certain demographic group is the first person to do something: “X is the first to do Y.” By celebrating specific groups, liberals are ignoring the chance to share a common vision for the country, he says.
“The fixation on diversity in our schools and in the press has produced a generation of liberals and progressives narcissistically unaware of conditions outside their self-defined groups,” writes Lilla.
