On campus, fear of vulnerability is driving the debate over safe spaces, writes Oliver Bateman in The Atlantic. Tenured professors fear the loss of a generation’s worth of free expression. Tenure-track professors fear offending the administration and thus losing the rare full-time academic job they have somehow found. Adjuncts fear everything — they can be cast aside at a moment’s notice. Add confused students and angry donors into the mix, and you’ve got a long-term problem with no solution on the horizon.
