A Socialist State of Mind

Mamdani’s Bad Ideas, Part 1: Seizing the Means of Production, Government-Run Groceries & High Taxes

By John Stossel

I don’t usually report on local politics, but I’ll make an exception for Zohran Mamdani because what he believes is what so many privileged young people believe, and these socialist ideas are just so stupid. He believes in government “seizing the means of production” (yes, really).

He proposes government-run groceries and much higher taxes on the rich (even though both have failed). Socialist economies were abandoned in Russia, China, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania, Zambia, Chile, Israel, Sweden, etc. because socialism wrecks lives.

But Americans voters still want to try it? In this video, and the next, we’ll break down why socialist ideas always backfire. Absurdly, Mamdani has so many bad ideas that we had to make two videos to fit them in.

Mr. Stossel is an investigative reporter with over 50 years of experience, beginning his career in Portland, Oregon, where he helped pioneer TV consumer reporting. After moving to WCBS in New York, he joined ABC’s 20/20 and Good Morning America, exposing con men and thieves through hidden camera footage. His work earned him 19 Emmys and praise as “the most consistently thought-provoking TV reporter of our time” (The Dallas Morning News) and someone who “entertains while saying something profound” (The Orlando Sentinel).
