Dismantling a Quota Culture

Welcome back to OnThePoint.  This is Greg C. Truax.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 established that admissions and hiring should be free from discrimination. President Trump’s executive order, “Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity,” reinforces those principles — a significant step forward.

The diversity, equity, and inclusion (D.E.I.) model, with its focus on “equity,” often devolved into racial and gender quotas. This created   sprawling bureaucracies that enforced ideological conformity. These initiatives alienated many, including those who value inclusivity.

Reaffirming merit-based opportunity is the right move—not only to counter harmful trends in higher education but also to uphold fairness and excellence as the core values of our institutions.
