In a special election for Tampa City Council, newcomer Naya Young beat veteran officeholder Thomas Scott, 61–39.
In a low-turnout race, voters chose change and new ideas. This wasn’t about party labels; it was about direction. Urban-core voters want City Hall to prioritize basic services—and they’re frustrated that benefits aren’t reaching every neighborhood.
Scott is an accomplished community leader, but a long list of establishment endorsements reinforced an insider image, while Young offered a fresh start.
Voters know their blocks; they discount endorsements when they don’t square with day-to-day experience—and, above all, with a desire for change.
