Welcome back to OnThePoint, I’m Greg C. Truax.

The federal government’s own tests have blown the whistle on our failing schools. Periodic national reading and math tests of fourth- and eighth-graders have collapsed to alarming lows.

Forty percent of fourth-graders and one-third of eighth-graders can’t even hit the “basic” level in reading. Twenty-four percent of fourth-graders and 39 percent of eight-graders scored below the basic level in math.

At the University of California, San Diego, the elite campus has added a remedial class for elementary and middle-school math.

This is what decades of union control, social experiments, and COVID school shutdowns delivered. America doesn’t just have an achievement gap; we have an accountability gap.
