Welcome back to OnThePoint, I’m Greg C. Truax.
As we celebrate the Fourth of July, a new Gallup poll delivers a sobering truth: American pride is fading.
Just 58 percent of U.S. adults say they’re extremely or very proud to be an American—down from 90% in 2001. The sharpest decline comes from Democrats, with only 36 percent expressing pride today, down from 62 percent last year. Republicans’ level of national pride has been much steadier, typically registering above 90 percent, including 92 percent today.
What happened to unity and shared purpose?
Pride in America shouldn’t depend on politics or who’s in the White House.
It’s about believing in the nation itself.
