Florida is often recognized for its deep red politics with  the election of  Republicans to office.

As I annually point out, a lesser-known aspect of the Sunshine State’s history is its claim to hosting the first Thanksgiving. According to the late Michael Gannon, a distinguished historian from the University of Florida, the inaugural Thanksgiving occurred in September 1565 in what is now St. Augustine.

If accurate, this event predates the Pilgrims’ Thanksgiving in Plymouth, Massachusetts, by 56 years and the establishment of Jamestown by 42 years.

While some historians contest Mr. Gannon’s perspective, his extensive research into Spanish colonial history provides a compelling narrative as we observe the Thanksgiving season in 2024.
