Most elected officials at national, state and local levels are affiliated with either the Democratic Party or the Republican Party.
But since 2009, according to Gallup polling, independent political identification by adults nationwide has grown. Its reached levels not seen before. Now, political independents at 41 percent greatly exceed the 28 percent of adults who self-identify as Republican and the 28 percent who self-identify as Democratic.
Generation X and the millennial generation, people born between about 1965 and 1996, are mainly driving the increased independent identification.
Why adults between the ages of 27 and 58 continue to identify as independents as they age is a good question for the Democratic and Republican parties to ponder.
