National Dog Day was founded back in 2004 by Colleen Paige, an animal advocate, according to the the NationalDogDay.com website. The day celebrates all dogs. “Our mission is to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort,” according to the website. The date of Aug. 26 is significant — it’s the date Ms. Paige’s family adopted her first Sheltie when she was 10 years old.
