As Wired Magazine notes, Massachusetts recently joined a collection of states that publicize hacks that have affected their citizens. Although 47 states require companies to disclose when a breach affects their citizens, only four states — Massachusetts, California, Indiana, and Washington — publicize the data. The purpose of posting these public records provides an incentive for companies to prioritize cybersecurity and avoid the “Wall of Shame” embarrassment of being included on the list.
