A country as riven by war as Afghanistan usually conjures up images of violence and suffering.
But it’s important to remember that there’s much more to this beautiful country.
The book Afghanistan, published by Taschen later this month, is a retrospective portfolio of Magnum photographer Steve McCurry’s most striking images of the country, from 1979 to 2016.
In addition to images of suffering, there are also images of joy. For example, in one photo, a group of Afghan girls juggle tennis balls in the streets of the capital.
Such images remind us of the importance of remembering what binds humanity together.
