On This Day in ’75, Peter Gabriel Left Genesis

By Jessica Wheeler, AliveTampaBay Columnist

On Aug. 15, 1975, Peter Gabriel announced that he was leaving Genesis. The band auditioned lead singers for more than a year, seeing more than 400 candidates before ultimately deciding that the band’s drummer, Phil Collins, should be the new frontman. Gabriel’s departure led the band into a poppier sound, while Gabriel was free to explore more experimental music on his own terms. His explorations led to the 1986 album So, with its hits “Sledgehammer” and “In Your Eyes.”
