How the Golden Globes Launched a New Culture War

Red-state conservatives have always been suspicious of Hollywood liberals, but that tension has taken on new meaning after Meryl Streep’s speech at the Golden Globes.

As Brooks Barnes writes in The New York Times, Streep “called on actors, foreigners, journalists and others to stand together and support the arts and the First Amendment, while portraying Mr. Trump as a bully who could whip his supporters into a frenzy and ‘show their teeth.'”

Conservative commentator Meghan McCain, daughter of Senator John McCain, tweeted that Streep’s speech was “why Trump won.” And, of course, Trump tweeted his negative opinion of Streep and her talents.

Film critic Michael Medved’s 1992 book Hollywood vs. America, which argues that Hollywood is out of step with conservative American values, looks more relevant today than ever.
