On This Day in ’66, ‘Monkees’ Filming Began

On May 31, 1966, filming began for the Monkees’ television show. Cast members Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith were recruited based on musical talent and acting ability to star in the series, which was meant to capitalize on the success of the Beatles’ films. The show would go on to win two Emmy Awards in 1967, while the Monkees briefly became the biggest musical act in the world. In 1967, they sold more records than the Beatles and the Rolling Stones combined, and scored a still-unmatched four No. 1 albums in one year.
