Should You Stream…examines the options available on popular streaming services to help you decide what new shows to check out. In this installment, we take a look at the hit CW comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
What’s it about?
Rebecca Bunch is a successful New York City lawyer, about to achieve her lifelong dream of being offered a partnership at her law firm. Everything is going just according to plan—so why doesn’t she feel happy? After a panic attack on the city sidewalk, Rebecca runs into her old boyfriend from summer camp, Josh, who tells her that he’s about to move back to his hometown of West Covina, California. As he gushes about how wonderful West Covina is, Rebecca has an epiphany: she’ll quit her demanding job and follow Josh out to California, where she hopes to rekindle their relationship. If that all sounds a bit crazy, that’s exactly the point; Rebecca is the titular “crazy ex-girlfriend,” after all.
In her new town, Rebecca finds a job at a more low-key law firm, complete with some questionable employees, and meets Josh’s friend Greg, who might be interested in her but wonders why she would pick up and move to a town like West Covina. Oh, and she meets Josh’s girlfriend, too. Now what?
With sly humor, a feminist slant, and a dash of lavish musical numbers, this show swings for the fences and mostly connects.
Who’s in it?
Co-creator Rachel Bloom stars as Rebecca, and the cast is rounded out by Vincent Rodriguez III, Santino Fontana, Donna Lynne Champlin, Pete Gardner and Vella Lovell. While most of the cast are new faces, they’re all ones to watch.
