Welcome back to OnthePoint, I’m Greg C. Truax.

Florida’s property tax system is in the news. Total levies for local governments jumped 108 percent over the past decade—far above population growth and inflation—reaching $55 billion in 2024. The burden is squeezing homeowners and now resembles “perpetual rent” to government.

A new Florida TaxWatch analysis maps the landscape and outlines five reform options, from sweeping changes to near-term fixes. Ideas include a multi‑year phase‑out of property taxes on homesteads, accelerated relief for seniors on fixed incomes, and eliminating non‑school property taxes.

The Legislature is now studying reforms, including what sources of revenue would replace property taxes.

Let’s see what develops.

From the NewsTalk 1040 studios, I’m Greg C. Truax.
