Welcome back to OnThePoint, I’m Greg C. Truax.
Dr. Paul Ehrlich, the famous prophet of environmental apocalypse, has died at age 93.
In 1968, the author of the Population Bomb warned: “The battle to feed all of humanity is over,” predicting mass famine so dire, Dr. Ehrlich even endorsed compulsory population control.
History proved otherwise. Global population rose from 3.5 billion to 8.3 billion. Death rates fell. Life expectancy climbed. Undernourishment dropped sharply. Agricultural innovation surged.
Nearly sixty years later, the crisis has flipped: falling fertility and possible depopulation.
Dr. Ehrlich joins a long line of celebrated experts whose dire predictions never materialized.
