Welcome back to OnThePoint, this is Greg C. Truax

NATO leaders recently gathered in Washington as the U.S. continues to carry a disproportionate share of the continent’s defense burden.

Since roughly 1960, the United States has averaged more than 61 percent of allied defense spending, according to the Cato Institute. Also, the 90,000 U.S. troops stationed in Europe form a large  portion of NATO’s  high-readiness forces.

As U.S. focus shifts towards challenges posed by China, the era of America being the world’s main defender is changing.

Europeans must step up and become well-armed allies,  significantly increase defense spending, which is essential for future security.
