Welcome back to OnThePoint, I’m Greg C. Truax.
Across Florida, families are being squeezed — not by Tallahassee, but by local governments. Property taxes are the culprit. When your home value goes up, politicians treat it like a cash machine. Even if they don’t raise the millage rate, your property tax bill climbs year after year on a paper gain you never see.
In 2019, local governments in Florida took in about $32 billion in property taxes. Today it’s roughly $56 billion — a jump of about 75 percent. Is that sustainable?
Question: Has your income risen by 75 percent?
Gov. Ron DeSantis and mainly Republican lawmakers are working on common sense solutions. We can fund law enforcement, schools and other essential services without letting property taxes spiral out of control.
