Welcome back to OnThePoint, I’m Greg C. Truax.

Congress has approved a White House-endorsed plan to reduce federal spending by $9 billion—$8 billion from foreign aid and $1 billion from public broadcasting, including liberal-leaning NPR and PBS.

Yet, one Democratic senator dismissed these cuts as “unhinged,” underscoring just how disconnected Democrats have become from the reality of a bloated federal budget.

“We need to get back to fiscal sanity and this is an important step,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Indeed, compared to the massive $7 trillion federal budget, $9 billion represents less than one percent. However, outside Washington’s insulated bubble, $9 billion is viewed on main street for what it truly is: an astronomical sum, far from mere pocket change.
