Welcome back to OnThePoint, I’m Greg C. Truax.

The most revealing thing about Melania isn’t what the usual critics wrote before most people could even see it—its what happened once regular moviegoers actually watched the film, a documentary which artfully follows the First Lady for 20 days through the unglamorous reality of a presidential transition.

The weekend results made the legacy media’s sneer look premature. Melania, which received an “A” CinemaScore and a near-unanimous score on the Popcornmeter, opened at roughly $7 million — a rare documentary performance that immediately put it in “best in a decade” territory.

Unfortunately, too much of today’s cultural commentary is less about the craft on screen and more about enforcing the “correct” politics off it. Moviegoers judged Melania on its merits.

From the NewsTalk 1040 studios, I’m Greg C. Truax.
