California remains one of the most dynamic places in the United States, home to Silicon Valley, Hollywood, world-class universities, vast agriculture, and extraordinary talent.
Yet it also shows what happens when government spending grows faster than results and liberal policymakers implement poor policies. Controlled by Democrats, state spending has surged more than 200 percent since 2000 despite only modest population growth.
Meanwhile, California has lost a net 1.9 million residents through domestic migration over the past seven years. Homelessness persists, and education spending has more than doubled, yet student outcomes remain disappointing on the Nation’s Report Card.
The warning from California is that prosperity can survive bad policies for a long time, but not forever.
