Welcome back to OnThePoint, I’m Greg C. Truax.
Film Director Christopher Nolan just reminded Hollywood of something it’s been trying to figure out for years: people will still go to the movies.
The Odyssey, even with its big-name stars, wasn’t a sure bet. It’s nearly three hours long, it’s R-rated. It’s based on an ancient Greek epic. Not exactly the formula for a summer blockbuster.
Yet the film, shot entirely on 70mm IMAX film cameras, has been a resounding box office success in the U.S. and internationally.
That’s the lesson. Streaming alone didn’t impact movie theaters. Forgettable movies did. Give audiences something they can’t get at home, and they’ll gladly make the trip to a movie theatre.
