Floridians are feeling the squeeze as rising home values prompt local governments to raise property taxes, creating a windfall of tax revenue and placing an unfair burden on homeowners.

Gov. Ron DeSantis questions why homeowners should face endless taxation—akin to monthly rent payments—merely for owning their own property. Property taxes are especially challenging for seniors and fixed-income families.

The governor is rightly calling for a referendum on the ballot in 2026 that will provide constitutional limitations on the ability of local governments to tax people’s property, particularly their homestead.

Florida’s disciplined spending under the governor’s steady leadership proves this: The solution isn’t higher taxes but responsible fiscal management.
